Swarens Memorial Higher Ground Shape Note Singing

  • St. Paul's Indy 6050 North Meridian Street Indianapolis, IN 46208 United States (map)

All are invited to join in the St. Paul’s Parish Hall for Swarens Memorial Higher Ground Shape Note singing from 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Please note that all are welcome - no musical experience or religious affiliation is required. Participation is encouraged and observers are welcome! All who come are invited to participate to their comfort level.

There will be three sessions of hymn singing in the morning (45 minutes each), a potluck lunch at noon that attendees are welcome to contribute to (it is voluntary, not a requirement) and two sessions of singing in the afternoon. Singers do not rehearse the music in advance. As FaSoLa.org describes: “Every singing is a unique and self-sufficient event with a different group of assembled participants. The singers sit in a hollow square formation with one voice part on each side, all facing inwards so we can see and hear each other. However, visitors are always welcome to sit anywhere in the room and participate as listeners.”

Singing will be from both the 1991 revision of The Sacred Harp and The Shenandoah Harmony. Loaner tunebooks will be available. All participants are encouraged to take precautions and please not attend if feeling unwell, recently exposed to Covid or displaying COVID symptoms. Masks will be available but are not required.

Free-will donations will be contributed to St. Paul’s Music, to support the upcoming pilgrimage to Ely Cathedral.
