All Day Shape-Note Singing (with Dinner on the Grounds)

  • St. Paul's Indy 6050 North Meridian Street Indianapolis, IN 46208 United States (map)

Saturday, March 22, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Parish Hall

All are invited to join Swarens Memorial-Higher Ground All-Day Singing. Singing will be from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for gathering and registration and a “Dinner-on-the-Grounds” potluck will occur at noon. Tunes will be called from both The Sacred Harp (1991 revision) and The Shenandoah Harmony; loaner tunebooks will be available. Please click here for more information.

If you have never attended a shape-note singing, all are welcome — no musical experience is required. Though this tradition is not affiliated with any religious denomination, it is a deeply spiritual experience for all involved and functions as a religious observance for many singers. As such, shape-note singings are not traditional performances. There is no audience, and singers do not rehearse the music in advance. As FaSoLa.org describes: “Every singing is a unique and self-sufficient event with a different group of assembled participants. The singers sit in a hollow square formation with one voice part on each side, all facing inwards so we can see and hear each other. However, visitors are always welcome to sit anywhere in the room and participate as listeners.”

Please take precautions and refrain from attending if you are feeling unwell, or have recently been exposed to COVID, influenza, or RSV, or are experiencing any symptoms. Masks will be available but are not required.
