Laurie Pierce
I oversee the staffed nursery, Children's Chapel, Godly Play classes and Youth Group on Sunday mornings. I help train and schedule children and youth to be involved in worship service roles like acolyting, choir, ushering, live streaming, Children Chapel leaders or assistants, managing worship tools, etc. I head the leadership team for St. Paul’s All-Parish Retreat, Deep Dive: Faith Exploration and Youth Confirmation and the Youth Group service/learning trip. I partner with the MLK Center on community events and joint programming. I plan annual events like Mess Fest, Bingo Night and Pancake Supper. I oversee the Meal Train Ministry and act as staff liaison for the Intergen Team, the Family Ministry Newcomer Team, the Family Ministry Events Team and the Fundraising Team.
I've worked at St. Paul's since August 2021. I majored in Religion and Philosophy and Youth Ministry at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. I've been working in Episcopal churches since I was 12 years-old - volunteering in the nursery in middle and high school, youth group leader, vacation bible school and youth group leader in college. During college, I taught Godly Play at a Children's Hospital and worked on community service opportunities through two different internships. I served in Peace Corps (China) from 2011-2013, teaching English classes and leading various campus organizations. Before coming to Indy, I worked as the Director of Family Ministry through the pandemic at St. Paul's, Wilmington, NC.
Since being at St. Paul's Indy, I have seen greater participation from the whole parish in Family Ministry and Youth Group-driven programs; the number of adult volunteers has grown from 20 to 70 people. Children and youth worship roles have expanded to include more opportunities to serve on Sunday mornings. Youth Group has gone from once/month to two hours every Sunday morning, with additional monthly events. Due to the numerous amounts of research on the topic and personal experience, I lead this ministry prioritizing the unique and valued opportunity in the Church for all generations to interact with and learn from each other.
I have three crazy kids and a dog. My husband is an Episcopal priest serving in a different parish, so you won't see him around much. As a family, we have a goal of going camping eight times per year because we all love it and find it's medicine for our mental health. I love people, dancing and parties. I grew up in Florida; my family still lives in Pensacola where we get to visit in the summer for a few weeks. I love this job for the people, collaboration with parishioners and creativity.
