Faith In Action Update :: House Bill 1030

In pursuit of St. Paul's mission to strive for justice and share Christ's love, the Advocacy, Equity and Justice team will regularly be providing suggestions/actions that can be taken, aligning with Episcopalian values. This new team is responding to a rapidly-changing political climate; if you have questions or suggestions for the Advocacy, Equity and Justice team, please click here to email Irma Boyett.

This week's suggested action is to contact your state representative to ask that House Bill 1030, which would repeal the death penalty, be heard. Make sure to contact your state representative, not your state senator, since it is a house bill. Allowing a bill to be heard is the first step. Many bills go unheard and therefore cannot be brought to a vote. Speed is important at this stage so calling or emailing is important. Click here to find your state legislator. You can also call or email Representative Wendy McNamara since she ultimately gets to decide which bills get heard.

Phone script:
”Hello, my name is xx and I live in zip code xxxxx. I’m calling to ask Representative xx to ask Representative McNamara to hear HB 1030 which would repeal the death penalty. Thank you for your time.”

“Hello, my name is xx and I live in zip code xxxxx. I’m calling to ask Representative McNamara to hear HB 1030 which would repeal the death penalty. Thank you for your time.’

The scripts are quick by design - you will most likely be connected to an aide or voicemail. While you’re welcome to provide more detail, at this stage they are tallying the number of constituents who care about which issues.
